In Chinese Medicine, winter is the time to slow down. Winter is associated with the kidneys which hold our body’s elemental energies, and rest is fundamental for the rejuvenation of the kidneys.
Yes, yes, I know December isn’t the easiest of times to slow down. It’s just a snowball of activities, shopping, coffee, parties, work deadlines, shopping for presents, food and drink. I often find that December just isn’t long enough to fit everything that’s expected in the run-up to the festive days, but that’s why it’s also important to remember to look after your body and mind.
Here are a few things taught through Chinese medicine that you can do yourself to help ground and calm you:
* On the soul of your foot in front of the ball where it meets the arch is the acupuncture point Kidney 1 (Yong Quan). Applying pressure here draws the energy down from the head if you’re feeling overwhelmed.
* Just like the point Yin Tang which lies between your eyebrows. Applying pressure here will help with both stress and anxiety.
Acupuncture, particularly on those points, works by improving the flow of Qi throughout the body while eliminating blockages and bringing balance to the mind and body. It can also activate endorphins which are your natural pain killers and release the built-up stresses and emotions within the body.
It’s the season of giving but remember to give yourself a relaxed and balanced festive season too.
