MOXIBUSTION

Moxibustion Explained

Moxibustion – or moxa for short – is a favourite in acupuncture therapies. The moxa is placed either directly on the skin or held over specific acupuncture points and gently lit up. The herb warms the skin, which relaxes the muscles and stimulates the flow of Qi through the body. When used in conjunction with acupuncture it can boost the immune system and help to improve overall health.

Moxibustion is often used to help symptoms of menstrual irregularities, tiredness, chronic fatigue, alleviate pain and to soothe stiff and arthritic joints.

Moxibustion – How It Can Help With Breech Babies

Moxa is also commonly used to turn breech babies. A breech presentation occurs when the baby is positioned feet-first which can make the whole birthing process more difficult for mothers.

Studies have shown that Moxibustion can help to turn babies head down, so they are in the correct position for birth. Its benefits in turning babies in the last few weeks of pregnancy is highly regarded by gynaecologists, and studies have shown that it has a 60-65% success rate to turn breech babies between 34 and 40 weeks of pregnancy.

It is a safe and relaxing treatment without the need of medical intervention.

After your first treatment, I will show you how you can safely administer the treatment yourself in the comfort of your home. However, it is important that moxa isn’t tried at home before proper training from a qualified acupuncturist and with permission from your midwife or obstetrician.
